We were at first thinking we were going to gut the whole kitchen and start all over with new cabinets but decided we could salvage the main structure of the existing cabinets. So we then thought we would just buy new cabinet doors to replace the old 70's stock doors and hardware. But finally we decided to sand down the existing upper cabinets, lay a fresh coat of paint on them and leave them open.
Once we got sanding we realized just how many coats of paint had been applied to these old cabinets. There were two coats of white paint, a cream color paint, and then the heavy dark stain that was on the original cabinets. We stripped most everything to the wood and then worked from there.
We added beadboard to all the cabinet backs, filled in everything with wood filler, and added a molding to the bottom of the cabinets. Then we painted the cabinets in a dusty soft blue. Here are some before and after pictures.
